Spetisbury Construction completes major refurbishment of Bournemouth’s Winton Health Centre

Dorset-based contractor Spetisbury Construction has completed a comprehensive refurbishment of Winton Health Centre on Alma Road, Bournemouth, delivering a modern, fit-for-purpose facility on behalf of Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust, funded through NHS England.

Acting as principal contractor, Spetisbury Construction carried out a full internal and external transformation of the site, valued at approximately £1.2 million, over a seven-month programme running from January to July 2026. The building will shortly welcome the relocating Banks and Bearwood Medical Practice alongside a wide range of community health services, including paediatric care, speech and language therapy, podiatry, leg ulcer clinics and community oncology.

A comprehensive transformation

The scope of works touched every part of the building. Externally, the team renewed three sections of flat roofing and high-level cladding, and installed new safety guardrails and handrails to support future maintenance and access. Internally, the practice now benefits from new flooring and decoration throughout, around twenty-two new fire doors, new aluminium front and rear entrance doors, and a new disabled access ramp to the rear of the building.

Behind the scenes, Spetisbury Construction carried out a complete renewal of the building’s mechanical and electrical infrastructure, including a new heating system, new radiators and hot and cold water feeds throughout, a new boiler system, and a full rewire. New integrated call systems were fitted in every clinical room, along with fire-stopping works across the building.

The reconfigured layout now provides twelve clinical spaces, a twelve-person working area for the district nursing team, a new meeting room, two health visitor offices, and a refreshed reception area, where the original reception desk was carefully sanded and restored rather than replaced, retaining a piece of the building’s character.

Problem-solving on an occupied, sensitive site

As with many refurbishment projects on older buildings, the team encountered unforeseen conditions once work got underway, including sections of roof structure requiring additional reinforcement and previously unrecorded ductwork beneath the floor. Spetisbury Construction worked closely with Dorset HealthCare and the wider project team to investigate, resolve and safely manage each issue as it arose, keeping the project moving without compromising on quality or safety.

The site also remained home to onsite residents throughout the works, meaning the team operated within agreed hours each day. Careful sequencing and close coordination with the client kept disruption to a minimum while the transformation took shape.

“This was a fantastic project for the team to get our teeth into. Beyond the roofing, mechanical and electrical work, a lot of what we delivered was about creating spaces that genuinely work better for staff and patients: from the reconfigured clinical rooms to the district nursing hub. We uncovered some unexpected structural and below-floor issues along the way, which is not unusual on a building of this age, and we’re proud of how the team responded, problem-solving on the ground while keeping the wider project on track. It’s brilliant to see Winton Health Centre ready to welcome the community back in.”
