Colin’s Nest at Eagles Mount Care Home Invites Local Groups and Businesses to Get Involved
Poole café, based in the grounds of the Kanesbury Care Group home, builds on two years of grassroots community work with a fresh call for new partners
Colin’s Nest, the café based within the grounds of Eagles Mount care home in Poole, part of the Kanesbury Care Group, is inviting local community groups, schools and corporate partners to get involved, as it looks to build on the strong neighbourhood ties it has developed since new management took over two years ago.
Manager Gem Gonzalez, who lives just four doors from the home, has reshaped the café into a genuine community hub. The café now supports seven local artists, displaying and selling their prints and originals, alongside handmade cards and crafts, some made by Gem’s own children.
“I wanted to really bring in the community focus,” said Gem. “We’ve got 90 residents from the local road on a WhatsApp group, and we’re a really close-knit community. I’ll often post to say, come on up and everyone does, it’s really lovely.”
The café has already built links with local schools, hosting the PTA group for Longfleet School, and has run informal events such as screening major sporting occasions with pastries and refreshments for neighbours. It is now looking to develop this further, welcoming enquiries from local organisations interested in hosting events, partnering on activities, or simply getting to know the café.
All food is prepared fresh on-site, from home-made soups and freshly baked jacket potatoes to sandwiches made to order and hand-mixed salads and coleslaw, nothing is prepared in advance, so every order is made exactly to the customer’s taste. Free parking is available on-site for café visitors.
The café is subsidised by Eagles Mount, allowing residents to use it free of charge throughout the day, as an informal alternative to the home’s main dining room.
Colin’s Nest is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 4.30pm, and Saturday, 9.30am to 1.30pm, at Eagles Mount, 25 Birds Hill Road, Poole, Dorset, BH15 2QJ.
