Why Do the Japanese Live Longer and How Can We Learn From Them?

New book by Barbara Lovesy reveals the rituals of longevity we can all adopt

As people across the UK and beyond search not just for longer lives, but better ones, nutritionist and naturopath Barbara Lovesy offers a compelling answer rooted in one of the world’s healthiest cultures. Her new book, Land of the Rising Lifespan: Japanese Rituals of Longevity (Balboa Press UK), explores why Japan consistently ranks among the longest-living nations, and how its simple, time-honoured practices can be woven into modern Western life.

At a time when wellness advice is louder and more confusing than ever, Lovesy’s message is refreshingly calm and grounded. Drawing on ten years of living in Japan, much of it spent in the ancient city of Nara, she reveals how longevity in Japan is not driven by trends or quick fixes, but by everyday rituals that nurture the body, mind and spirit, and place community and purpose at the heart of wellbeing. You will discover how incorporating these rituals can alleviate common health concerns, enhance your diet and bring a deeper sense of peace.

“Living in Nara, surrounded by ancient temples and a deep respect for nature, completely reshaped my understanding of health,” says Lovesy. “Longevity in Japan isn’t about perfection. It’s about balance, connection and small daily choices that quietly add up over time.”

Part cultural exploration, part practical guide, Land of the Rising Lifespan is structured in three accessible sections:

  • Rituals of longevity, exploring Japanese approaches to food, movement, mindfulness, discipline and social connection
  • A guided journal, encouraging reflection and gentle lifestyle change
  • 20 authentic Japanese recipes, designed to help readers experience these traditions at home

The book also addresses pressing modern concerns, including rising healthcare demands, preventative health, sustainable living and the growing need for calmer, more meaningful ways of living well as we age.

Rather than asking readers to overhaul their lives, Lovesy encourages starting small: a mindful meal, a cup of green tea, a shared ritual, showing how these modest shifts can lead to lasting improvements in health, energy and outlook.

“My hope is that readers feel inspired and equipped,” Lovesy explains. “These practices are not about becoming Japanese, they’re about rediscovering a slower, more intentional way of living that supports wellbeing, longevity and a sense of purpose.”

With its blend of expert insight, lived experience and gentle encouragement, Land of the Rising Lifespan will appeal to readers interested in longevity, wellness, Japanese culture and preventative health,  particularly those seeking evidence-based, holistic approaches that feel achievable in everyday life.
