The Poole Arms, Poole Quay’s oldest pub, continues to impress diners with its fresh, locally sourced seafood, warm hospitality, and rich history. Established in 1635, this distinctive family-run pub has been a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike, offering a menu that showcases the very best of Dorset’s seafood alongside an extensive drinks menu and renowned selection of real ales.

On a recent visit with my husband Paul, the inviting aroma of home-cooked seafood greeted us as we stepped inside. At 6pm on a Friday evening, the pub was already lively, filled with locals enjoying the warm and welcoming atmosphere. Most tables were reserved, a testament to its enduring popularity.
Our attentive and knowledgeable waiter, a longstanding member of the team guided us through the menu with confidence, making excellent recommendations. The evening’s meal was nothing short of outstanding.
For starters, we enjoyed:
- Moules Marinières – Plump, fresh mussels bathed in a fragrant white wine and garlic sauce.
- Scallops with Black Pudding and Bacon Lardons – A perfectly balanced dish, where the sweetness of the scallops complemented the rich black pudding and crispy bacon.

- Red Gurnard Fillet – A revelation for first-time gurnard diners, with its delicate, slightly sweet flavour and firm texture.
- Poole Arms Fish Casserole – A beautifully seasoned dish filled with a generous mix of fresh seafood, delivering comfort and flavour in every bite.
To finish, we indulged in a homemade Sticky Toffee Pudding, a rich and moist delight smothered in toffee sauce and paired with creamy vanilla ice cream—a perfect ending to an unforgettable meal.

The pub is also celebrated for its extensive drinks menu, offering a carefully curated selection of fine wines, spirits, and locally brewed real ales. With a rotating selection that includes a fifth beer during the busier summer months, it’s no surprise that the pub has built a strong reputation for serving some of the best pints on Poole Quay. The Poole Arms is a true family affair. Owned by Michelle and Carl, who took over from Michelle’s parents, Bob and Maureen Kerr, in 2016, the pub has remained in the same family for over 20 years. Their passion for delicious, home-cooked food and quality drinks is evident in every detail. But the family commitment doesn’t stop there—Michelle and Carl’s daughters Meghan and Bethan are also part of the team.
- Meghan, a university student studying midwifery, works in the kitchen, bringing energy and dedication to every dish.
- Bethany, a sixth former and soon-to-be university student, provides excellent service on the floor.
- Meanwhile, 14-year-old Xavier wasn’t around during our visit due to other commitments, but we hear he’s already started making cheesecakes—proof that the next generation is already stepping up!
